During the time before the voice of the seventh angel comes the angel with a little scroll…
Sometimes we end up doing a “rough draft” of a future painting… finding placement, color, form. There are areas of possible improvement, but it may not happen for awhile. It’s just nice to work through a creative endeavor, without worrying about a finished product.
While reading through the book of Revelation, and hoping one day to illustrate the entire book, this angel stood out from the rest and I had to paint him. I played some with gold and silver leaf, discovered the way to the rainbow on his head, wondered at how his feet might be “pillars of fire.” The fore-shortening was challenging along with the scroll. But my execution of the angel is nothing compared to the Word. Let me “read it to you.”
“I saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire; and he had in his hand a little scroll which was open. He placed his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; and he cried out with a loud voice, as when a lion roars; …Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, Who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that There Shall Be Delay No Longer, but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished…”
It seemed to be relevant to the times…. Soon, Jesus will return.
